The Supreme Court decided 5-4 on Wednesday that it was unconstitutional to apply the death penalty in cases where the defendant is convicted of raping a child, and I quote, "the death penalty is not a proportional punishment for the rape of a child," despite the horrendous nature of the crime - this is taken directly from Justice Anthony Kennedy, who wrote the opinion for the majority.
I'm sorry, but WHAT?
I absolutely, positively, am 100% in favor of the death penalty for anyone convicted of this horrendous crime. Pedophiles and child molesters CAN NOT be rehabilitated, they CAN NOT be re-integrated into society after 'treatment' and therapy, they will ALWAYS re-offend.
Now, I'm not talking about the 18 year old guy who had sex with his 16 year old girlfriend or vice versa. I've said before, I find it ridiculous that in those cases that the 18 year olds then have to register as sex offenders but that is a whole other issue.
Back to the issue at hand: The Supreme Court is flat out wrong. At least leave the decision up to the states to decide whether or not to impose the death penalty, but do not make it a sweep across the board declaring it unconstitutional. I think it is pretty ridiculous that the court feels that treason and espionage are horrible enough crimes for which one can be executed, but raping a child just doesn't qualify. Disgusting.
